SoBS was founded in 1991 by Alice Middleton MBE who lost her brother to suicide on February 7th 1982. Finding little support available the seed was sown to establish a group designed specifically for the needs of those bereaved by suicide. Eight years after her brothers’ death Alice placed an advert in her local paper seeking to make contact with others who had also been bereaved by suicide. She is now the charities founding patron. As the saying goes, the rest is history with groups established throughout the UK.
The first Suffolk SoBS group was launched March 2012 in Bury St. Edmunds by Suzy Clifford. On June 8th 2009 Suzy was bereaved by suicide and experienced first hand the feeling of isolation. A second group was established in Ipswich, October 2013. Exactly a year later Lowestoft SoBS was launched and supported by Gary Page, Chair of Norfolk and Suffolk foundation trust. For the first time survivors in Suffolk have a service to access and in theory can attend all three groups. Families or couples may attend together or benefit by attending on their own.
